ACHIEVING BALANCE

Achieving balance in our daily life is very similar to learning how to ride a bicycle. Initially, when learning how to balance on a bike, a significant part of the learning process involves periods of being out of balance. You start out centered on the bike fora few seconds and then lean too far to one side, then too far to the other side. You wobble this way and that while experiencing brief moments of balance in between. You could even get so far out of balance that the bike falls over. You might get scraped, feel upset or frustrated, or temporarily forget that being out of balance is an integral part of achieving balance. You could become so discouraged that you lose sight of your goal and start to believe that your life is all about falling, getting hurt, and feeling frustrated. If you buy into this belief, you might find yourself giving up and never learning how to ride
a bike. If you persevere, however, you will discover your balance point and, with practice and persistence, easily maintain it at any speed.

When I was a young spiritual seeker, at the age of six, my family moved to a new neighborhood. I had a large, red, three-wheeled, rickety bike that had been passed down from two cousins. I’m not sure if the bike was even new when the first cousin received it. I was the only six-year-old in the neighborhood who didn’t have a two-
wheeled bike. I asked my father if he would buy me one so I could zoom along with the other kids. He said I would have to learn how to ride one first. I shared my dilemma with one of my new friends, Eddy McKenna, and he volunteered to teach me how to ride.

Eddy had a small, eighteen-inch two-wheeled bike. He held the bike upright so I could get on. Getting on was easy. The bike was so short that I could straddle the seat and sit on it while keeping my feet on the ground. When I was ready to go, I would put my feet on the pedals and pedal to build some momentum. Eddy kept one hand on the back of the seat to assist me with the balancing act. Initially, as I picked up some speed, he would let go and I would wobble, first this way, then that way, and then boom, down I would go. I soon discovered that I could stay seated, pop my feet off the pedals, and
place them on the ground to slow down or stop the bike before I toppled over.

Eddy was so patient. He was the third of 6 children and had a heart of gold. He shouted many words of encouragement, but he couldn't  really explain to me how to gain my balance. Balance is something you must grasp for yourself.

Eddy and I spent many hours that day devoted to the task at hand, and by the time my father got home that evening, I proudly showed him that I was ready for my very own two-wheeled bike.

My father made good on his word, and the next day he presented me with a used 28 inch tall bike. I couldn’t place my feet on the ground and sit on the seat at the same time. I wondered how I would slow down or stop the bike in an emergency situation. My
father said I would grow into it. It took years for that to happen, but I was not discouraged. I was thrilled to have that bike, and I practiced riding it every day, always striving to grow big enough to sit on the seat and pedal at the same time.

Learning to ride a two-wheeled bike was just the first of many balancing acts that I achieved in life. I quickly learned how to roller skate, ice skate, and ride a horse. Each accomplishment began with a few falls and scrapes, but I knew from my bike-riding
experience that with practice and persistence, balance would come.
Initially, I thought of balance as a physical accomplishment, but as I focused more on my spiritual growth and development, I realized that balance applied to my inner life as well as my outer life.
I learned to achieve balance as a friend, a wife, a parent, a spiritual student, a professional psychic, the director of a seminar company, a spiritual Master who taught a body of students about achieving balance, the Headmaster of the Swan Center for Intuitive Living, a caretaker for my dying parents, someone who lost both parents eight
days apart, an empty nester, a divorced woman, an aging woman and on and on.

Every transition in life presents the opportunity to achieve a new state of balance. The principles of learning to ride a bike apply to each one. You start out with a goal. You commit to the task. You wobble, leaning too far to one side and then to the other. You might fall, feel afraid, or get so discouraged that you forget that your goal was to
achieve balance. It is helpful, at times like this, to remind yourself that life is not about being fearful, falling, getting hurt, or feeling discouraged. It’s about achieving balance in every area of your life, to ensure a closer connection with the God consciousness, spiritual and physical well-being, freedom, adventure, prosperity, and true happiness.
